Wigan Observer 21-9-1918
Private Joseph Lythgoe, whose parents reside at 4, Gidlow Houses, Standish, but whose home was at Darlington-street, Wigan has been killed in France. He formerly worked at the Giant's Hall Pit of the Wigan Coal and Iron Company. Some five or six years ago he proceeded to Australia, and joined the Australasian Expeditionary Force, with whom he went to France, and was killed on the 12th of May last. He was 27years of age, and has left a widow and no family. In a letter to his parents the deceased's officer stated that Private Lythgoe was shot through the head and killed by a sniper. He had fought gallantly and keenly against the Huns who were attacking our position at the time, and he moved further forward so as to be better able to use his rifle. He had just exhausted his last cartridge when he met his death. he never feared death, and faced the enemy calmly and determinedly.
